Internet Connection Library
Welcome to AOL's Internet Connection library! I'd like to especially welcome those of you who are making their first visit to our area and point you to some of our resources. Just below the button you clicked to come in here and read my weekly report, there is a button marked LIBRARY GUIDE. Here you'll find text files that will tell you what you can find in our libraries, how to submit files for uploads to share with other members, and how to get the information you need.
This week I'd like to introduce you to our E-Zine library. E-Zines are Electronic Magazines. Folks from all over the Net publish these e-zines on just about any topic you can think of. In the Internet Connection E-ZINE library, we offer a selection of high quality e-zines on Net-related topics to provide you with the latest information available. If you've browsed this library, you'll have noticed that the e-zines there come in several flavors. Some are in a text format (files end in .TXT) and some are in an HTML format (Files end in .HTM). Here's how to use each of them:

To read e-zine files ending in .txt, just download them and open them in a text editor or word processor.
.HTM
----
While you can read .htm versions of e-zines by opening them in a text editor or word processor, you're missing half the fun! These .htm files are e-zines that have been published so they can be used with your Web Browser, and offer you not only the text of the magazine, but links to other sites on the Net that have related information that the authors of the e-zines want you to see. To use one of these files, download it and use Keyword: WEB to launch your AOL Web Browser. Now, click on FILE, and then on OPEN and shuffle through your directories to find that .htm file and open it. The browser will connect to the site and load the e-zine for you. (Please see the note below if you've not yet aquired the Web capable AOL Software)

rtfm.mit.edu: pub/usenet-by-group/alt.zines
What?? You say "I dunno how to ftp" or "FTP-what??". FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It's a way for you to download files from the internet iteself. AOL has made pretty easy for all of us! Here's how:
-Use Keyword: FTP
-Click on the icon marked GO TO FTP
-Here you'll find a list of favorite sites that AOL "mirrors", which basically means AOL keeps a copy of everything in that site so all 3 million of us don't visit them at once and give 'em a nervous breakdown. You'll notice that rtfm.mit.edu happens to be one of the sites that AOL mirrors. Just highlight it and click on CONNECT. If you wanted a site that is not listed on the mirror list, you'd simply click on OTHER SITE and type in the address.
-Okay, we've made it as far as connecting to rtfm.mit.edu, but the files we want are in rtfm.mit.edu:pub/usenet-by-group/alt.zines
Each item that is separated by a slash is a step deeper in the directories. First we find the "pub" directory and choose it. Then we scroll thru the "pub" items and look for "usenet-by-group" and open it. Now we've got the "usenet-by-group" directory open, but it's pretty darned big. Keep clicking on that MORE button at the bottom of the box till you find the folder marked "alt.zines". Open the "alt.zines" folder and...hey! There's the 5 part FAQ on "Zines_on_the_Internet"! Open each part in turn and click the DOWNLOAD button to gather your files. Once you have them, you can open and read them in a text editor or word processor.
Pretty easy, huh? Try it today!

Doug's current responsibilities include working with others to strategize technical support for the upcoming GNN (Global Network Navigator) Internet access service, and working with the QA (Quality Assurance) team in testing new features of the GNN and NaviPress software. Doug will be talking about the web, the Internet, past, present, and future, home page design, the online service industry and more.
